Privacy Policy

Effective date: [DATE]
Requires final legal review before publishing. This is a draft. Highlighted items are placeholders or statements to confirm against the shipped app.

This Privacy Policy explains how Celestash (“Celestash,” “the App,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you install and use the App, buy a license, contact us, or visit celestash.com.

Celestash is designed as a local-first clipboard app for Windows. Your clipboard history is stored on your PC, not on our servers.

1. What Celestash is

Celestash is a Windows desktop app that helps you save, organize, search and reuse what you copy. It is built with Tauri, Rust and Svelte and is distributed through the Microsoft Store.

You use Celestash through the Island and Shelf at the top of your screen, the Quick Paste palette, the Library window, keyboard shortcuts and the Windows system tray. The Island can also show what is playing on your PC and control playback. Depending on how you use the App, Celestash may process copied text, links, code, colors, images, file references and related metadata.

2. Local-first by design

Celestash processes and stores your clipboard history locally on your PC.

We do not operate user accounts for the App. Celestash does not provide cloud sync or cloud backup, and we do not collect your clipboard history on our servers.

Celestash keeps its data in a local database and supporting files in your Windows user profile, in a Celestash folder under your app data directory (%APPDATA%). When Celestash is installed from the Microsoft Store, Windows keeps this folder in the App's private package storage.

3. Information stored locally on your device

Depending on how you use the App, Celestash may store the following information locally on your PC:

  • Clipboard content you copy, such as text, rich text, links, code, colors and images.
  • Images: copied images, and image files you copy or drop onto the Shelf, are saved as image files in Celestash's local storage so they can be previewed, searched and pasted again.
  • Files: for other files you copy in File Explorer, Celestash stores the file name and path, not a copy of the file's contents.
  • OCR text recognized from images, used to make them searchable.
  • Metadata such as when an item was copied, its type and size, a name or title for the item, and the name of the app it was copied from.
  • Your organization: Sets (including nested Sets), favorites, pinned clips, Multi-Clips, Inline Shortcut triggers, Clip Reminders, auto-filter rules and categories.
  • Settings such as display, motion, peek and launch-at-sign-in preferences.
  • License information: your license key, its activation status, and a randomly generated installation identifier (see section 8).

This information stays on your PC and is not sent to us.

4. Clipboard monitoring

While Celestash is running, it watches the Windows clipboard so it can save new items you copy to your local history.

Clipboard content can include sensitive or personal information, such as passwords, messages, financial details or other people's data. Celestash saves what you copy, so you should only use it where keeping a local clipboard history is appropriate for you.

[CONFIRM: Celestash does not currently skip content that password managers mark as excluded from clipboard history. State the final behavior here.]

5. Images and OCR

When you copy an image, Celestash can read the text in it with the optical character recognition (OCR) engine built into Windows. OCR runs on your PC, without sending images anywhere, and uses the OCR languages installed in Windows.

The recognized text is stored with the image in your local history so you can search for it and copy it. OCR results can be incomplete or inaccurate, so don't rely on them where accuracy matters.

6. Files and drag & drop

When you copy files in File Explorer, Celestash records their names and paths so you can find and paste them again. If a file is moved or deleted, the stored path may no longer work.

When you drag a stored image out of Celestash into another app, Celestash may write a temporary copy of that image to a local folder so the other app can open it.

7. Media and Now Playing

To show what's playing, Celestash reads playback information that Windows media controls make available, such as the title, artist, album artwork, playback position and playback state, from apps such as Spotify, YouTube in your browser and local media players. Celestash uses this information to display and control playback (play, pause, skip and seek) from the Island.

Media information is used while the App is running and is not added to your clipboard history. [CONFIRM: media information is not written to disk]

Celestash does not receive media content from these services, and they don't receive your clipboard history from Celestash.

8. Payment and license information

Celestash licenses are sold through our payment and licensing provider, Polar. Celestash does not use Microsoft Store purchases for its licenses.

When you buy a license, Polar processes your payment, billing, tax, receipt and license key information. We do not directly process or store your full payment card details. Polar handles this information under its own terms and privacy policy. [CONFIRM: Polar acts as merchant of record]

We may receive limited purchase information from Polar where needed to provide your license, support your purchase, prevent abuse or handle refund and licensing questions. [LIST ORDER DATA WE RECEIVE FROM POLAR, e.g. name, email address, plan, order and license status]

License activation. When you activate, check or deactivate a license, the App connects to Polar's license API and sends your license key, the activation identifier, and a device label. The device label is a random identifier that Celestash generates when it is first installed. It is not your hardware ID, PC name or Windows account. The App checks your license with Polar from time to time.

Celestash does not send your clipboard history, copied content, images, OCR text, Sets or other saved clips to Polar.

9. Microsoft Store

Celestash is distributed through the Microsoft Store, which handles installation, package signing and updates. Microsoft's privacy statement applies to your use of the Store.

We may receive information that Microsoft makes available to app publishers through Partner Center. [CONFIRM: which Partner Center reports we receive, e.g. install counts, ratings, crash reports]

10. Analytics and telemetry

In the App: [CONFIRM WHETHER ANALYTICS/TELEMETRY IS USED. The current source code contains no analytics, telemetry or crash-reporting code. Its only network connection is to Polar for licensing.]

On celestash.com: [WEBSITE ANALYTICS PROVIDER, OR “none”] [COOKIE USE, OR “no cookies”] [HOSTING PROVIDER]

The website loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google's servers when you visit, and Google receives information such as your IP address under its own privacy policy.

11. Information we do not collect

We do not collect or receive:

  • Your clipboard history or copied content
  • Your images, files, file paths or OCR text
  • Your Sets, favorites, pinned clips, Multi-Clips, Inline Shortcuts, reminders or search history
  • The keys you type. If you turn on Inline Shortcuts, typed characters are kept briefly in memory only to match your triggers and are never logged, saved or sent.
  • Personal information through Celestash user accounts, because Celestash does not have user accounts

We may receive limited purchase, license and support information through Polar, or in messages you send us, as described in this Privacy Policy.

12. When you contact us

If you use the contact form or email us, we receive the name, email address and message you send, and anything you choose to include, such as screenshots or your Windows version. We use it only to reply and provide support. [CONTACT FORM PROVIDER] [SUPPORT MESSAGE RETENTION PERIOD]

13. How we use information

We use the limited information we receive to:

  • Deliver, activate and validate your license
  • Answer support requests and fix problems
  • Prevent license abuse and fraud
  • Handle refunds and payment questions
  • Meet legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information or use it for advertising.

14. Data sharing

We share information only as needed to run Celestash. This includes Polar for payments and licensing, and the service providers listed in this policy. We may also share it when required by law, as described in section 21.

15. Data retention

On your PC: Celestash keeps your clipboard history until you delete it. It does not currently remove items automatically after a set period.

With us: we keep purchase, license and support information only as long as needed for the purposes above and to meet legal, tax and accounting obligations. [CONFIRM RETENTION PERIODS — legal review]

16. Deleting your data

  • Delete individual clips from within the App. Deleting an image clip also removes its stored image file.
  • Deactivate this PC from Settings to release its license seat.
  • Uninstalling the Microsoft Store version of Celestash removes its app data from your PC. [CONFIRM ON A RELEASE BUILD]
  • To ask about purchase, license or support data we hold, email us at the address below or use the Polar customer portal.

[CONFIRM: whether the App offers “clear all history” or “pause capture” controls. If it does, list them here.]

17. Security

Celestash is designed to keep your clipboard history on your PC. License checks with Polar use encrypted connections (HTTPS).

No app, device or storage system is completely secure. Anyone with access to your PC, your Windows account, your backups or your local files may be able to see your locally stored Celestash data. Celestash does not currently encrypt its local history.

You are responsible for securing your PC: use a strong Windows sign-in, keep Windows updated, consider device encryption, and control who has access to your device and backups.

18. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over personal information we hold about you. These can include the right to access, correct or delete it, or to object to how it is used. To make a request, contact us at the address below. Because your clipboard history stays on your PC, you can view and delete it directly in the App.

[RIGHTS UNDER APPLICABLE LAW, e.g. GDPR/UK GDPR/CCPA, AND LEGAL BASIS FOR PROCESSING — legal review]

19. Children's privacy

Celestash is not directed to children [CONFIRM MINIMUM AGE — e.g. under 13 or under 16 — legal review]. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us personal information through a purchase or support request, contact us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.

20. International users

Your clipboard history stays on your PC. Purchase and license information is processed by Polar under its own privacy policy and may be processed in other countries. [CONFIRM INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER DISCLOSURES — legal review]

21. Legal requirements

We may disclose limited information we hold, such as purchase or support information, if required by law, legal process or a valid government request.

Because Celestash does not collect your clipboard history on our servers, we can't provide your clipboard history, copied content or local App data in response to such requests.

22. Third-party services

Celestash works with, but is not affiliated with or endorsed by, the following third parties:

  • Microsoft: the Microsoft Store (distribution, installation and updates), Windows OCR and Windows media controls
  • Polar: payments, license keys, license activation, receipts, taxes and the customer portal
  • Spotify, YouTube and other media apps whose playback information Windows makes available to Celestash
  • Google Fonts: fonts on celestash.com

Each service is governed by its own terms and privacy policy. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, content or availability.

23. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll post changes on this page and update the effective date above. If we make material changes, we may also let you know through the App, on our website or by other reasonable means.

If you keep using Celestash after an updated policy takes effect, the updated policy applies.
